What’s your best experience you’ve had with Hire Space?

In 2019, I was invited to the NTAs (National Television Awards) by the O2. We got to walk down the red carpet, watch the ceremony in one of their VIP boxes and got to party with all the celebs at the afterparty!

How does Hire Space create a diverse and inclusive culture?

I think that the fact that two thirds of the transformation team are not British, or English is not their main language speaks by itself. When tackling complex tech problems we always try to find answers in past experiences, and the fact that our backgrounds are so diverse is a great way of ensuring that we always find the perfect solution and just the only one that we have.

What do you enjoy most about working for Hire Space?

For me it has to be the people, and the variety of work. I am lucky to work with a number of different teams within my role, and though everyone has a common goal, we all bring new ideas and fresh perspectives to meetings. No one day is like another, and I have the opportunity to produce a real range of events.

What’s different about working at Hire Space compared to other roles you’ve had?

Ever since I started working at Hire Space, I’ve always felt like everyone is equal, no matter whether you’re from a different country or if you’ve been at Hire Space for a shorter or longer period of time. Even with the founders, I’ve always felt that I could be sincere and friendly with them, without being intimidated that they’re the CEOs. That’s the huge difference between Hire Space and any other company I’ve worked at.

What are some unique perks Hire Space offers to its employees?

Super flexible ways of working in terms of both hours e.g. +/- 3 hours GMT and remote/office balance. Where you can choose to be fully remote to everyday in the office and anywhere in between. The way you work is left entirely up to you, I think this one thing that sets hirespace apart, being actually fully flexible on the way each person wants to work.

What makes a career in sales at Hire Space unique?

I’ve spent the whole of my career to date in various account management and relationship management roles and can honestly say working as a RM for Hire Space is the best! Firstly the nature of the work is SO varied, I look after all of my accounts enquiries, this could be hugely complex events for 1000s of people, over multiple days or a simple private event for 10 guests. This enables me to work with event spaces of all sizes and styles not just in London but across the UK and Internationally. One day I could be looking for a private members club in Miami, the next moment for a conference room in Leeds!

Hire Space are really open to suggestions on improving the way we impact the world around us, and genuinely make an effort to act on them, from cutting down on waste within the company, to encouraging employees to take part in workshops on sustainability. From a marketing and communications standpoint, this gives us a really great opportunity to influence the events sector for good, and promote positive change through setting an example for our clients and industry partners.

What traits are necessary for someone to thrive at Hire Space?

Adaptability. We’re a relatively small team and things can change fast. There’s plenty of opportunity to volunteer to help another team out, so that willingness to do something different that might be outside of your job spec is key. You’ve got to be a team player, but also a self starter. Hire Space is really one of those places where you get out what you put in.

To thrive at Hire Space you have to have a real can -do attitude and a glass half full resolve. The teams positivity is infectious and so it’s not hard to feel the same way. That said, you do have to be willing to work hard and get stuck in! We are a fairly small team and so you have to be happy to jump in and help where you can. What aspect of Hire Space’s culture keeps you at the company?

Despite the fact that I work from a remote location and only communicate with the rest of the team virtually, I can sense the great energy that exists inside of the organization. I appreciate the way we recognize and celebrate our accomplishments, as well as the way the company is concerned about our physical and mental well-being.

What’s a ‘day in the life’ like in your role?

My day usually starts off with a team call to run through projects we’re all working on for the day. Next, I’ll review my social media schedule and post what I need to post for that day, as well as plan ahead and prep any assets needed for the week. After lunch, I will usually write some content, ranging from blogs to landing pages to long form content for SEO. Lastly, I’ll do a status check on our venue marketing and make sure everything is scheduled and delivered on time.

What makes the company culture unique?

Hire Space has a generous, fun-loving and youthful culture. Whilst rare, that’s far from unique, but we have the benefit of in-house events experts and tonnes of collaborators in the venues and events industry that are always looking to improve their relationships with us as a market leader, which means our culture is supplemented by far greater access to incredible and varied experience than I can imagine any other company has.

Hire Space is one of the friendliest environments I can imagine working in. It feels like you can ask anyone anything, at any time, and you’ll get a warm and supportive answer, which in turn helps you to learn and develop. Opinions are genuinely valued, and open communication means everyone feels involved and invested in the company.

Do you feel like your opinion matters at Hire Space?

Hire Space definitely listen to our views. As an example, when we challenged the number of holidays we had in Hire Space, the company decided to add two ‘Hire Space bank holidays’ for the whole company as well as an early finish on Fridays during summer time, which as you can imagine was very well received by the team!

What’s your best experience you’ve had with Hire Space?

I’ve had a lot of amazing experiences since I started working with Hire Space 8 months ago. From visiting quirky new venues on FAM trips, working at our annual trade show Event Lab to speaking with my brilliant clients about their exciting upcoming events. My top experience would definitely be attending the National Television Awards at the O2 last September! Being hosted in a corporate box and being surrounded by famous faces is definitely something I'll never forget.

What’s it like to work remotely at Hire Space?

I enjoy working from home because it allows me to be more productive without being distracted. When I'm not exposed to the interruptions that are so common in an office environment, it's much simpler for me to concentrate on accomplishing my responsibilities. It also ensures that I finish my day's tasks at the end of my shift, which helps me achieve a better work-life balance.Hire space is supporting me in this process and being able to work from the beach or in the mountains without being stressed how to get to the office on time is something that I really appreciate.

Smail Ouballa

Smail Ouballa

What’s a ‘day in the life’ like in your role?

I start 3h earlier than other Hire Spacers, perks of living in a different time zone. Connecting to Slack, checking my email and then planning my tasks for the day before preparing my coffee. My morning is dedicated to Code Reviews or any small tickets I can finish before the daily standup, my favourite part of the day, meeting the tech team to chat about what we are working on and spend a couple minutes talking about everything and nothing. After my lunch break, I continue working on my tickets backlog and enjoying coffee.

Joanna Crosby

What aspect of Hire Space’s culture keeps you at the company?

One aspect of the culture that keeps me at the company is how well everyone gets on as one big team. I really like that at Hire Space we call the whole company a ‘team’ not just individual teams, it really highlights how everyone works together in the business. I really enjoy our breakout out rooms twice a week on our morning meeting which gives us a chance to catch up with each other, particularly those we don’t get to work with on a day to day basis. When the whole team does meet up in person everyone gets on really well and there is no divide at all!

What do you enjoy most about working for Hire Space?

The founders are constantly sense checking with the team on culture, well being and benefits. The are genuinely concerned with the team and what makes them happy, constantly adjusting accordingly. This is done through being open to suggestions, polling the team on what they want , having an external culture guru who checks in often. All enable them to listen and respond, rather than just talking, there is lots of action.

How do you feel Hire Space supports you as a parent?

They don’t stand in the way of good team members that want to be even better parents. An incredible paternity leave, flexibility in where and when I work, and their genuine eagerness and enthusiasm to grant me time away from the desk with reasons like “to take Lucas swimming for the first time” has meant I haven’t missed a single significant moment in my son's life.

How do you feel Hire Space has invested in you and your professional development?

I’m lucky enough to have the best line manager who always listens to what we have to say, helps us improve ourselves on a professional level and gain knowledge in different spheres. We’ve had a lot of virtual sessions with the tech team and that has helped me a lot when it comes to improving my QA skills. I’ve also purchased a couple of courses on Learnbly with the learning budget provided by Hire Space.

What are some unique perks Hire Space offers to its employees?

Thankfully it’s becoming less unique across businesses but the mental health support at Hire Space is great. Whether it’s using mental health sick days, having access to a trained mental health practitioner or just being given the space you need to find the best way for you to be your best self, there is a lot of flexibility to empower employees to make the right decisions for themselves

How do you feel Hire Space supports you as a parent?

The parental leave here at Hire Space is just out of this world. Having three months to adapt my whole lifestyle to the second baby was a HUGE help. Also, if I need to cancel last minute because my son is sick it’s never a problem, which removes one thing to worry about from the equation and leaves you to focus on what is really important.

The opportunities for career progression. I started off in a very junior role, and now two years later I’m finding myself conducting interviews for that same role! One thing I’ve always noticed about Hire Space, is how from Day 1, everyone has a voice. It doesn’t matter what your role is or how long you’ve been with the company, everyone is able to bring ideas to the table. The mantra is, “if you think there’s a better way of doing something, let’s hear it!” and I love that!

How does Hire Space support your mental and physical health?

Hire Space does a great job of supporting the team's health and specifically have implemented a lot of structure and provide a lot of support around mental health. The company made a decision a few years ago to recognise mental health sickness the same as physical health sickness, and is open about taking mental health sick days. We have fully paid access to a coach & physchotherapist, whenever we want or need. There is a mental health first aider, and it's just definitely a very open company regarding mental health. Recently the company has announced more investment in the team's health, by provided a wellbeing budget to spend on whatever we like, be it gym membership, subscription to a wellbeing app, childcare, healthy eating... We're also doing a group 5k run in a couple of weeks. To top all this off, there is a lot of recognition at Hire Space to make sure everyone is aware of the great work being done around the company. Sales gongs and marketing enquiry results are lauded, yes, but there are awards given out across the company to recognise achievements in line with our company values.
